Part 1: Getting Back on Track: Postpartum Running Essentials

Hey there Reader

Welcome to the first part of our series designed to support you as you return to running after pregnancy. I'm Dr. Abby Siler—a physical therapist, runner, and fellow mom. I specialize in helping runners like you overcome the physical challenges that come with motherhood so you can return to what you love—running!

Understanding the Importance of Postpartum Recovery

Pregnancy and childbirth bring about significant changes in your body. Your muscles, especially those in the abdomen and pelvic floor, stretch and may weaken to accommodate your growing baby. It's essential not to rush back into high-impact activities like running without allowing your body to heal and strengthen. Jumping straight back in too soon increases your risk of injuries due to weakened muscles and joint instability.

Common Postpartum Running Challenges:

  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Abdominal muscle separation (Diastasis Recti)
  • Joint laxity and instability
  • Managing fatigue and time constraints

Why Professional Guidance Matters

Navigating postpartum recovery with a physical therapist can significantly reduce injury risks and boost your running efficiency. Interested in 1:1 coaching? Check out the application link I've included at the bottom of this newsletter!
